Edith Graydon joined KAS on 31 March 1905. She was 11 years, 3 months, and 5 days old. She left on 20 April 1909 at the age of 15 years and 3 months.
She is twice listed as medallist during her stay at the school: the first time for the year 1905 (her first year – entry of record: 5 March 1906); the second time for the year 1907 (her third year – entry of record: 5 February 1908), when she is listed on the same page as her sister Avis, who was also a two-times medallist, in 1906 and in 1907 (entries of record: 1 February 1907 & 5 February 1908).

Recalling her school days at Kensington Avenue Schools, on 3rd January 1923, Edith Thompson wrote:
Now I am starting Dickens again. I think I have read all his at least three or four times, but you can always pick up one and feel interested in it at any time. I remember at school we used to have what was called a ‘Reading Circle’. A Dickens book was chosen by our teacher, we read it at home, not at school, and then we each chose a character from the book and wrote a little essay on him or her, as the case might be. These essays we would all take to Wanstead Park on a Saturday afternoon: we would each read our own out loud, and then it was discussed in general. We usually took our tea to the park and made a little picnic party of it. I remember an essay I was highly commended on by the teacher. It was on ‘Quilp’.

20.8.1901 Today the Kensington Avenue Schools are open for the purpose of admitting new children and arranging the stock and apparatus. The following teachers have been appointed by the Board to work in this Department (Girls’) and have commenced duties today:

The page references in THE GIRLS’ SCHOOL LOGBOOK: August 1901- July 1929 are pp. 69 – 173. Pages 101, 102, 154, and 155 are missing from the transcript. None refer to Edith Graydon, her sister Avis, or to Ida Burton. Ida Burton was at KAS with Edith and Avis Graydon but she is not listed as medallist in the logbook. Ida was the lifelong friend who repeatedly wrote in Edith’s defence in the newspapers. She also oversaw Avis Graydon’s conversion to Catholicism.

‘The Committee have under consideration the question of the arrangements for the distribution of prizes and medals of the schools under this Authority.
I am desired to inform you that it has been decided that in future such arrangements shall be decided by the Divisional Committee for the Group in which the school is situated including the selection of the member who is to distribute the prizes
I shall be glad if you will kindly inform me when your next and subsequent distributions are to take place in order that the matter may be placed o the agenda for consideration at the next subsequent meeting if the Divisional Committee for you Group.’

‘The Committee have had under consideration the question of the prizes to be awarded to scholars who make perfect attendance for the seventh and subsequent years and I am desired to inform you that they have decided that a prize of the value of 7/6 nett, together with an unframed attendance certificate be awarded to such scholars irrespective of the standard which they may have reached, in place of the Framed Certificate.
As this decision will modify the terms of Regulation No. 94., which states that a Framed Certificate shall be awarded to each scholar who makes perfect attendance for six years or more, I shall be glad if you will kindly make an entry for this alteration in your Log Book.’
19.4.05 The following letter has been received from the Education Committee: –
‘The Board of Education having decided that the registers may be marked on all occasions of Prize Distributions held during School hours, I am desired by the Committee to inform you that in future, the attendance of Scholars shall be marked whenever the Distributions of Prizes and Medals are held during School hours in any of the schools under the control of this authority.’

The following letter has been received from the Education Committee, dated 27th July, 1905: –
‘The Committee have had under consideration a request from Mr. F. Dugard H.M.I., that the School Year of the Schools under this Authority should be altered so as to end on 30th April each year instead if 31st March, and I am, desired to inform you that they have decided to accede to H.M. Inspector’s request.
I shall be glad if you will kindly prepare your schemes of Work for the 13 months from 1st April 1905 to 30th April 1906.
Mr Dugard will probably wish all the schemes to be sent to this office for his signature and I will let you know the date when you should forward your schemed for the purpose.’

Permission has been given to admit girls into this department who are living in the immediate neighbourhood of the school.
Yesterday, Aug. 31st, Cookery Classes were commenced at Essex Road Cookery Centre. There are three classes, A, B, and C, consisting of eighteen girls in each. The girl attend cookery in each. The girls attend cookery on the Friday of each week.
5.9.05 The following letter has been received from the Education Committee:
‘The Committee have had under consideration a circular letter received from the Board of Education calling the attention of Local Education Authorities to a circular letter issued by the Local Government Board; to the Guardians of the Poor in England and Wales, the object of which is to adapt, under the Relief (School Children) Order 1905, certain provisions of the Poor Law, to the relief of children who may sent to a Public Elementary School by their parents in a state of destitution for want of sufficient nourishment. I am desired to inform you that they have decided that the Head Teachers of all Schools under this Authority be authorised to apply to the Relieving Officer for relief in cases of children sent to School insufficiently fed.
The name of the relieving Officer for your district is Mrs. A. G. Gwinnell of 285 Shrewsbury Road East Ham, to whom you should make application in writing in such cases.
The full name and address of the child should be given in each case and in cases requiring urgent relief the communication should be headed ‘Case of sudden and urgent necessity’.

“The Committee have had under consideration a scheme for dividing the Borough into School districts for the purpose of securing that only those children residing within the area of a School district shall be admitted to the School District for such district. This arrangement is made in the hope that there may be no further complaints from parents that children who reside in some cases a considerable distance from the school are allowed to attend whilst those living in close proximity are refused admission if the school be already full.
I am desired to enclose herewith a list of the roads in your School district, shewing also the boundaries of the district and to request that you will kindly co-operate in seeing that only those children in future who reside within your School district are admitted to your Department.
In the event of any child being refused admission because of its residing outside your School district, please report the case on the Form provided for that purpose in order that the Attendance Officer may arrange for the child to be admitted to the school for the district in which such child resides.”

30.11.05 The following letters have been received from the Education Committee:-
I ‘The Committee have had under consideration, the number of children who habitually come late to school and I am desired to point out that the Bye-Laws require every child to attend school the whole time for which such school is open, and that though attendances of late scholars may be earning the Government grant, the fact of a child arriving after commencement of school according to the Time Table constitutes a breach of the Bye-Laws.
II The Committee have had under consideration, the provisions of Paragraph 1 of the Prefatory Memorandum to the Code for 1905 with reference to the maximum age up to which scholars may receive instruction at Public Elementary Schools. I am desired to inform you that scholars over the age of 15 years are allowed to attend any school under the control of this Authority but that such scholars should not be allowed after the end of the financial school year in the course of which they reach that age.
As no Fee Grant is paid, in respect of the attendances of scholars over the age of 15 years it will be necessary that you should keep a separate register for the attendance of scholars over that age.”

With the view of preventing overcrowding in future, I am desired to ask you to kindly communicate at once with the parents of Scholars attending your school who live nearer to Monega Road School in order that such scholars may be transferred to the latter school at the end of the present Educational School Year viz. 30th April 1906.

“With reference to Jewish children who are prevented from qualifying for medals by reason of their absence from school during the Jewish holidays, I am desired to inform you that during the current year Jewish children will be prevented from attending School owing to holidays usually observed by the Jews on the following days namely 30th. & 31st. of May; 20th, 21st and 29th of September; 4th, 5th, 11th 12th. of October.
It has been decided that in the case of Jewish children who are absent from school on the days above named and who would otherwise be entitled to receive medals under Regulation 94 for perfect attendance, medals be awarded to such Scholars and that perfect attendance in such cases shall mean attendance on every occasion on which the School has been open, except absences in those cases occurring on the days of the Jewish holidays above-named and in addition, one day or two half-days, allowed by Regulation 95.

“I am desired to inform you that in future the Medical officer of Health will send postcards to the Head Teachers notifying cases of infection instead of the pink notices which will be discontinued. These postcards will be written and posted to the Head Teacher by the Sanitary Inspector at the time when he visits the infected house and this arrangement will, it is hoped, secure promptness in notifying these cases if infection to the Head Teachers. The Medical Officer will continue the present system of issuing a letter to the Head Teacher when a scholar is discharged from the Isolation Hospital but the use of the white clearance letters will be discontinued in the case of houses disinfected after the recovery of a patient. In regard to the latter, Head Teachers will see from the weekly lists of infected houses issued to all schools, the date on which any particular house has been disinfected. Head Teachers should see that the children are not re-admitted to school until the expiration of 14 days from the date on which the house was disinfected.”

‘The teaching in each of the eleven classes is bright and interesting and the girls show a high degree of responsiveness and intelligence in the class lessons. The reading ad recitation, the handwriting and composition, are very good, with points of excellence in the higher standards. I am desired to inform you that the Committee have decided that in the case of scholars who are withdrawn from school for the purpose above named, such absences shall not prevent any children from making perfect attendance for the purpose of awarding medals and prizes, provided that such children have not been absent from school on more than two half-days during the school year in addition to the absence occurring on Ascension Day.
In accordance with the recent decision of the Committee, the system of awarding medals for attendance will be discontinued at the end of the current financial year for each school.’
The Committee have had under consideration the question of the value of medals as awards for perfect attendance. I am desired to inform you that they have decided that, in future, medals be not awarded to scholars attending the schools under this authority for perfect attendance and that the Regulations 98 & 99 in the Regulations for the Management of Day Schools, referring to the award of such medals be cancelled.
I am further desired to inform you that this decision will take effect at the end of the present financial school year in the case of each school.
In accordance with this decision medals will be awarded to scholars attending your school who make perfect attendance during the Financial School Year ending on 31st. Dec. 1907. After that date the award of medals will be discontinued.’

‘I am instructed by the Education Committee to inform you that they have decided to amend Regulation No.69 of the Committee’s Regulations which refers to the absences of teachers. In future a Medical Certificate will be required to be furnished to the Committee if a teacher is absent from school duty for one half day or longer, unless such teacher obtained leave of absence according to Regulations 64 and 65.
Regulation 69 will now read as follows: –
The Committee will require a medical certificate to be furnished by any teacher who is absent from school duty for one half-day or longer, unless such teacher has obtained leave of absence according to Regulations 64 and 65.
In the event of any teacher failing to comply with this requirement, the salary of such teacher will be stopped for the period of absence.

Ex. Std. VII classes
‘The want of sufficient Secondary School accommodation in this large Borough, and the absence at present of any provision for Higher Elementary Education, have led to the establishment (since 1st May 1907) of social classes of Ex. VII Std, scholars in four of the Council’s Schools. These schools have been selected as convenient centres for the 20 schools of the Borough for the supervising skill of the Head Teachers, and from the fact that Ex. Std VII scholars were already in attendance.
The object of the classes has been to provide special instruction for scholars who can remain at school beyond the completion of their fourteenth year; to prepare boys for commercial or trade life, and the girls for commercial or domestic life. The general curriculum has been carefully drawn up and in each case a skilful class teacher has been chosen. The curriculum includes commercial correspondence, office routine, shorthand book-keeping, mensuration and higher arithmetic, history and geography with special reference to trade, besides an extension of the ordinary course in English, drawing, and elementary physics for boys and of English and domestic subjects for girls.
The results of this first year’s work have been decidedly successful: the numbers in attendance at these special classes have been fairly well maintained thro the year, the co-operation of the parents has been secured and the instruction generally has been thoroughly given since the classes have not been too large.
It is doubtful whether the division into two sections, office and trade, or domestic is sufficiently marked to necessitate a separate curriculum for each. Further experience will probably suggest modifications in some of the classes. It is also to be regretted that there is no provision for handicraft teaching for boys, corresponding to the extended cookery course provided for the girls.
The establishment of these classes seems likely to induce a longer stay in school on the part of a considerable number of the older scholars and their general success suggests their extension to other East Ham Schools in which

I shall be glad if you will kindly arrange for appropriate lessons to be given to the scholars in your department on the date named.’

‘With reference to the decision of the Committee to discontinue the award of medals to scholars for perfect attendance and to cancel Regulations 98 and 99, I am desired to inform you that it has been decided to amend Regulations 100 and 101, of the Committee’s Regulations, so as to read as follows: –
Regulation 100.
Prizes shall be awarded to deserving scholars to the value or rate of not more than £ 4-19-0 nett per hundred in average attendance in Boys’ and Girls’ Departments and to the value or rate of not more than £1 nett per hundred in average attendance in Infant Departments (excluding Std. I). The selection shall be determined by the character, conduct & progress of the scholar during the Education School Year. In no case shall any prize be awarded unless the scholar has attended some school or schools in the Borough for at least twelve months immediately preceding the end of Educational School Year (viz. 30th April)
Regulation 101.
Special Prizes for Merit, together with a Bronze medal, shall be awarded to three scholars in each class (Senior Depts., and Std. I in Infants’ Dept.) who obtain respectively the 1st., 2nd, and 3rd. places in order of merit according to the results of the terminal examinations of the class held by the Head Teacher during the Educational School Year in respect of which the prizes are given.
The nett value of such prize shall not be greater than the amounts shown in the following scale except as herein provided: –

I ‘In view of an accident which has recently happened at one of the schools thro’ some scholars having attempted to move the piano from one position to another and to prevent possible injuries to scholars, I am desired to ask you to kindly see that the piano or heavy articles of furniture or apparatus in your department are not on any account moved by scholars. Kindly also see that the teachers in your department do not give instructions to any scholars to move such furniture or apparatus from one position to another.’
II ‘It has been brought to the notice of the Committee that in several schools the head teachers have a practice of giving reading books which are unsanitary or unfit for school use to scholars as rewards for good conduct.
The Committee have decided that this practice of giving reading books to scholars shall be discontinued and I am desired to ask you to kindly see that all disused reading books and text books are returned to the Office stores when the annual collection of unusable stock is made. No reading books supplied for use in school may on any account be given to scholars.’
